L’Àrea de Medicina Interna de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron inclou la planta d’hospitalització i les consultes externes, amb un equip multidisciplinari format per professionals d’infermeria, medicina, rehabilitació, treball social i administració. És unitat de referència a Catalunya i a l’Estat en malalties autoimmunes sistèmiques i minoritàries, i atén pacients amb patologies cròniques aguditzades o agudes, com la insuficiència cardíaca, la MPOC o la COVID-19. La majoria de pacients són pluripatològics i fràgils, fet que exigeix una atenció integral, coordinada i centrada en la persona i la seva família.
L’organització per àrees de coneixement ha impulsat projectes com la detecció precoç de risc social mitjançant l’escala de Gijón i la intervenció immediata de treball social. També s’han desenvolupat processos clínics compartits amb altres especialitats i s’ha consolidat l’ús de l’ecografia clínica com a eina diagnòstica.
